Information for Exchange Students

Application
If you would like to join Leiden University as an exchange student, you should be nominated by your home university’s exchange co-ordinator. The co-ordinator knows Leiden University, and will have more information on the application procedure, deadlines, student housing, etc. Also, he or she will submit the application form. The best place to find out if your university can nominate you and how to apply for a place is via the International Office of your own university.

Course admission
Courses in English 2008 offered through the exchange programme in Leiden are suitable for students who have had at least two years of academic educa¬tion. To enrol in the programme, students must have a GPA of 3.2 (out of 4) or the equivalent. Non-native speakers must demonstrate their proficiency in English, preferably by means of an IELTS test.

Admission to a course depends on approval by the relevant departments or lecturers. Please note that specific course prerequisites may have to be met for enrolment in a specific course. Depending on the course level, you may be expected to have a higher level of related (academic) background knowledge. Admission to a course may also depend on the maximum number of participants who can be accommodated.

Admission procedures for non-EU exchange students
Firstly, a completed application form should be sent to the International Office at Leiden University. Please refer to the checklist on the application form to ensure that you include all the required supporting materials. If there is an exchange agreement and you are nominated by your home university correctly, you can be accepted as an exchange student. It is, however, up to the departments where you would like to take classes to make the final decision on acceptance. You will then receive a letter of acceptance, and the staff at the International Office will take care of the rest of the procedure, including such matters as obtaining an entrance visa (if needed), assisting in finding accommodation (if requested), and other practical matters.

Application deadlines
Application deadline for international students are:
- April 1 if you want to enroll for the Autumn semester (September - December)
- October 15 if you want to enroll for the Spring semester (January or February - June)

Information for Study Abroad Students

Who can apply?
All international students who do not fall under the terms of an exchange programme and who would like to do one or two semesters of non-degree study can apply to Leiden University as a Study Abroad Student. Leiden University charges a standard Study Abroad tuition fee which is either paid by the student directly, by the sending university or the Study Abroad partner institution.

Admission Requirements
The Courses in English 2008 available for the Study Abroad in Leiden programme are suitable for advanced undergraduates, who have had at least two years of academic education, and for graduates. To enrol in the programme, students must have a GPA of 3.2 (out of 4) or the equivalent. Non-native speakers must prove their proficiency in English with a test certificate (570 paper test, 230 computer test and 88 internet test for the TOEFL or 6.5 for the Academic IELTS test).

Course Admission
Admission to a course depends on approval by the relevant departments or lecturers. Please note that specific course prerequisites may have to be met for enrolment in a specific course. Students' applications will therefore be considered in terms of how their academic background matches the courses chosen.
Admission to a course may also depend on the maximum number of participants who can be accommodated.

Admission Procedures
A completed application form should be sent to the International Office at Leiden University. Please refer to the checklist on the application form and also make sure to add a passport photo (2cm x 3cm). All additional requirements are mentioned on the application form.

All applications are reviewed by the International Office in consultation with the relevant faculty (faculties) or department(s). The final decision on admission to a course is made by the faculty or department concerned.

Application deadlines
Application deadlines for international students are:
- April 1 if you want to enroll for the Autumn semester (September - December)
- October 15 if you want to enroll for the Spring semester (January or February - June)
